Looking Back - Looking Forward : India Perspective

I am sitting back and looking at the year that's going by the the new year to come. Over the last twelve months , we did things but not with a clear vision of the future. I wanted to mention few which are striking for development of India :

1. Broadband policy - India got started by putting a broadband policy. I think this was a very welcome step. On the other hand , what we missed is a holistic approach - what is the current staus and then where do we want to go. We have put a number but without the backend approach. I think what we missed in looking at the lacunae's in the current status and then putting together a strong proposal.
What I am saying is 10Mil by 2010 is a nice goal to have but can we link this with the service providers ? Say they need to take 10% of their new deployments towards broadband , need to link the number to the revenue share or something like this.
the reason for me saying this is the Indian service providers have 1) different priorities - huge market starving for simple voice communication 2) creating the basic IP infrastructure 3) huge issues with content and security associated with distribution.
Given these facts , they are more driven towards fulfilling these areas and commitments towards a broadband service.

The users are really starved for good connectivity and speed.

My recommendations hence are :

1. Regulate Cable operators - CAS is a must to reign them in. this will drive synergy between cable operators and Carriers for working towards a last-mile solution
2. Unbundle local loop - this is a must if we have to reach the number or any closer to that
3. Open up more wireless frequency spectrums - this will atleast allow smaller players to come-in as we saw in the dotcom days...we have 39 ISP in Ahmedabad finally almost 16 survived !! This creates open field for more players and an oppty for large carriers to then consolidate

Ah...A space of my own...

My first experience with blogging....great sense of establishing oneself on the net....

2004 has been a series of negative-impact year going from bad to worst as the year ended. pray and hope 2005 turns the page into something new and beautiful...One of the thoughts I had while learning and creating a blog...dont get sad get up and do something new.
